Enchanted items can easily make characters too powerful; one way to give players cool toys to play with, but still challenge them is to have one-use magical items, such as potions, wands with charges, and for Dragon Age cases, bombs and special arrows. Those arrows cannot be found in stores (unlike the CRPG!) and the bombs must be specially made. Since there is scant rules on crafting, I will just list the effects of those items and leave the methods of making those special items till later.

Bombs

These alchemical creations explode in a variety of ways when expose to air, or when the mix of strange blackpowder within it is ignite, causing the clay jars or pots holding the mixture to shower upon the enemies. It takes a Strength test (3d6 + Strength) to make a good throw, and it at most can go up to 8 yards.

Bombs in the CRPG does good damage at the beginning (the Prima Strategy Guide lists them as doing 80 points of damage), but become lackluster towards the end of the game. As characters in the CRPG starts with 90 to 110 Health, and the PnP version starts with 20 to 35 Health, the bombs all do 3d6 points of damage.

As this is a PnP RPG game where stuff can be more flexible, I have added some side-effects of using those bombs.

Acid Flask: 3d6 nature damage within 4 yards, all targets take 1d6 points of damage next round, and 1d3 the round after. Double the AR for reducing damage from the Acid Flask.

Fire Bomb: 3d6 fire damage within 4 yards, will set flammable substance on fire

Freeze Bomb:3d6 ice damage within 4 yards, puts out fire, creates a thick alchemical fog which gives -2 penalty Attack to those within

Shock Bomb: 3d6 electricity damage within 4 yards, make a Constitution roll with the TN as the damage done or else loses major action

Soulrot Bomb: 3d6 spirit damage within 4 yards, all those who takes more than 12 points of damage suffer -1 penalty to Magic for 1 minute

Arrows

Those arrows are either coated with a susbtance that does elemental damage, or weaved with magic to achieve their effects. Enchanting items is usually left to the Tranquil (or in some cases, a very talent Dwarven savant), and hence it is not possible for PCs to craft their own enchanted items within the constraints of Freleden.

Andraste’s Arrows: Target suffers -2 Magic for one turn if hit
Arrow of Filth: +1 Nature damage
Elf-Flight Arrow: +3 Attack, use 3 Stunt Points to make a target unable to perform a major action
Fire Arrow: +1 fire damage
Ice Arrow: +2 ice damage

Nothing burns like rage, sharpens as grief and cuts like hatred. This great sword was said to be cooled by the tears of a dragon, formed from iron from a falling star that have crashed into a city and reduced it to rubble, and was forged in the heat of a volcanic fire that had reduced numerous cities to ashes. Whose hatred is pure as midnight and poison would find the sword giving off a slight humming. The wielder of this sword, however, would never find rest in sleep and would be steeped in melancholy. He would always find new targets to hate, no matter what.

Dragon Warrior
Two-Handed Sword +1 (d10+1, 9), if the wielder is facing a hated target, he can choose a number between 1 to 3 to represents his hatred. That number is added to the enchantment bonus of the sword for the duration of the fight. Record down the ‘hatred’ that he has chosen. At the end of the fight, add up all the hatred he has chosen since having the sword, add it to 10. This is the Magical Attack of the curse that he has to fight off. The curse has a delayed duration and is that he would be severely grieved and would come to hate someone close or important to him.

Fate
Hatred as my Weapon, Always Hating

Altered Fate
Hatred as My Weapon +x (Frequent, x is the value of an Aspect related to the character’s hatred), Always Hating +3 (Frequent, disability)
Abilities: Hatred Never Dies +x (target: self only, form: event, function: curse, disability, x is the value of an Aspect related to the character’s hatred, triggers: when character kills a hated target of his choice)

The phrase “bsererker’s fury” comes to mind when one considers the tale behind the Bloodfury, a short sword with blood-rust blade, crude steel pommel and hilt with crude runes inscribed upon it. A company of men at arms were ambushed by a large horde of goblins and put up a desperate fight (and flight)…

One of the warriors, who was pinned at a cliff wall, had no choice but to fight with all his life. His surviving companions, one which became a minstrel afterward, notice that with each blow the goblins landed, the desperate warrior fought on much fiercer. Although he perished, the sword which he used in that fateful battle did not and was imbued with some of its owner’s tenacity and fury.

Fate 3.0 Stats
Aspect: Fight till my last breath! , Before any of you shed more blood

Altered Fate Stats
Let Blood Fury take me! ( Common Major Aspect, use by character when have 2 or less Physical Stress boxes unchecked, combat actions only, buff), Berserk Speed (Common Significant Aspect, use by character when have 2 or less Physical Stress boxes unchecked, Initiative only, buff)

Dragon Warrior Stats
Short Sword (d8, 3 points), becomes a +2 weapons (d8+2, 5 points) when wielder has 3 HP or less and also grant the user one additional attack at the start of the round before anyone else acts. He would only collapse when his HP falls below -3 (which is when he dies too).

The story goes that due to a bitter feud between a knight and a sorcerer over a lady whom they love, the two challenged each other to a duel – with the sorcerer promising that he would not use magic. However, the knight doubted the promise. Knowing that he would never have any chance against the sorcerer’s spells, the knight sought a blade which would ward him from magic. Having found one, he then met the magus for the match. To the knight’s surprise, the sorcerer fought fair and square with no magic and was beaten soundly. However, the knight was shamed by his own action and became a hermit instead.

The sword was changed by the event and is now known as The Grief of Shame.
