A thick mist has raise up among the region, thick and reddish in colour. Shimmering lights could be seem flickering within, and all in its path are reduced to smouldering ashes. Entire villages and cities have disappeared – no debris, not even a standing pillars and no human remains. Panic is running wild among the communities.
- A rift to an alternate plane causes the mist to escape from it. It is not evil in any sense; it is just doing its job. In the alternate plane, those mists are responsible for “cleaning up” and are attracted to large concentration of living beings (why living beings would be considered as waste in the alternate plane is up to the GM’s imagination). By understanding how the mist work, the adventurers could probably lure it back to the rift where it emerges from (or open one themselves) and end this crisis.
- A coven of wizard had been experimenting to devise a new way of transportation – permanent teleportation gates which would allow people to traverse great distance. They have failed and after tens of years of trying, gave up the project. A freak accident of magic caused the gate to be activated, but the warding holding the magical energies open failed, and the rift began to take form as a mist and escaped from its stationary position. All those devoured are sent to an alternate plane of existence. The adventurers could locate the stronghold of those wizards, convince them that what they did need to be fixed, and put an end to that doomed experiment
- The mist is actually the manifestation of a demon, and every time it feeds, it would grow stronger and larger. It is bind to this world with a ritual, and if the players could destroy the ritual place the mist would be dispelled. However, whoever called this demon into being must have some motive in mind, and the mist itself is intelligent and telepathic. Once it is aware of the adventurers’ plan, it will try to intercept them. Adventurers who are consumed by the mist would find themselves in a dreary landscape with a red-tinted sky, with gnarled trees with the faces of men and women in torment. Escaping from the forest would also lead the adventurers straight to the ritual ground.
