During days, vultures scavenged the dead; in the nights, the Charnel Moths come to finish up the work. Those carnivorous moths feed on the rotting flesh of corpses, usually travelling in swarms. Their dust, known as corpse dust, are a rare reagent used for nefarious alchemical mixture and as aid for some rather disturbing spells. As it is rare to come across a charnel moth (for dead moths are instantly devoured by their own kind, anyone coming across a live swarm rarely live to tell the tale), there are many things unknown about them.
- The inhabitiants of an old manor house are suffering from unexplainable coughs, shortness of breath and comas. Servants would be complaining that rooms and floors would always be dusty. Sorcerers would be able to identify the ‘dust’ to be corpse dust, which are usually found on the wings of the Charnel Moths. Could there be a swarm somewhere nearby? Maybe the adventurers should check the attic
- A hospice for the aged and dying has became the site of a strange mystery. Patients would disappear in the middle of the night on a weekly basis, leaving nothing but fine dust. Those dust turns out to be corpse dust, but how could charnel moths be flying about inside a hospice? The strangest thing is that – for some of the patients disappeared, they sighted to be wandering about in the nearby woodlands. It turns out there is one terrifying aspect about the Charnel Moths – they are highly psychic, and a swarm acts as one. When they have devoured a living body, the moths could transform themselves into a semblance of the victim. This particular swarm is hunting for a secret hidden within the hospice, and has to use human vessels to get to what it wants.
- The harvesting of corpse dust is a dangerous and frightening process. It invovles using corpses as bait, when covering oneself with pungent scent that would mask one’s odour and fool the moths. The moths, once fed, would be dormant for a while, going into a form of sleep. Then the harvester could decliately scrap some of the dust off the wings of the moths, or devise a plan to trap the moths, excite them (hence causing the dust to fall). And now the adventurers need some corpse dust off those moths…
