• A moment again, there was just a vast expanse of empty lands. Then there was the sound of a silent boom, and a large walled city manifested right into where it was once just natural landscape. The origin of the city is unknown, and no one could identify the emblems on its flags; everything about it is unfamiliar.

    1. The city has manifested itself within the depth of a vast desert, near a dozen oasis which are vital for merchants and traders. Small trade towns and cities on the fringe fought bloody wars and played politics for control of those precious pools of water. Now suddenly, a city appeared between them! The situation is tense. Some are proposing an alliance with the city; other aggressive sorts are considering an attack on the city, to seize it so that they may control all the water. If the adventurers are involved, whatever they do may just tip the balance towards war or political skulldrugger. Lords and traders may worry about boundaries and water, but the adventurers may also be wondering where in the world did that city come from, and what happened? What about their motives?
    2. Three thousand years ago, ravagers and monsters came pouring out from an astral rift, and armies and nations perished before them. The city of Athedril, in order to escape this fate, has erected a gigantic magical circle around their city and escaped into time, to the future, where they hope that the dark horde which was attacking them would disappear. They were wrong – the ravagers travel through astral tunnels, and while the city was being transported through time, some of the rifts appeared within the inside of the magical circle, bringing them forth to the present time.
    3. The city reappears at a desolate corner, near the coast, upon the bleak and lonely moors where none venture. It has fallen into ruins, though evidence of its culture and greatness could still be seemed. This is one of those fabled hidden cities, and this one is masked from view by the Pillars of Veiling, where seven of them surround the city on all side. The effect of those pillars generate a powerful invisibility spell which hides the city from view, and cause those who enter the hilly landscape nearby to lost their way. Ironically, the city fell victim to an earthquake, and no one was able to help them for they could not see it, and none could escape out, for the usual gate they used was crushed and blocked, and the Pillars of Veiling prevented them from reaching the outside world. However, someone has found and tampered with the pillars, causing the enchantment to fail. Sorcerers, sages and wizards of all sort are rushing to fight over artefacts and ruins of this hidden city. However, it is all a trap, for during the earthquake, something emerged out from the ground. It has eaten all those who live, and it hungred..the creature took a while to realise why there were no visitors, and had purposely dispelled the invisibility veil, so that it might feed…

Nice. I’m a big fan of Danny the Street in Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol, if you’re looking for more ideas relating to moving/folding/sentient geography.
