With the growth of towns and cities, vermins of all sort (and shapes) begin to infest the dwellings of men. Rats are just one of the more numerous, persistent and stubborn pest to roam the streets and ancient sewers. Besides devouring stores of food, they are also bringer of plauge and diseases. Rat-catchers, often menials from villages or prisoners serving “correction” are often employed to keep the population of rats in check. However, recently it seems to be the other way round. Rat catchers found been found dead in tunnels beneath the city, and some went missing and never returned. Have the rats really dragged them off?

    1. Smugglers have began to use the tunnels for their own devious ends, and a couple of the rat catchers have stumbled upon their operations. They either killed them and purposely set up the scene such that it looked like the rats were eating them alive (basically by pouring honey all over the body) or persuaded the rat-catchers to join them in their nefarious business. The adventurers are likely to have a run in with the smugglers if they poke their nose into the missing rat-catchers business. Who runs this operation, anyway, and what is being smuggled that requires such secrecy?
    2. Someone wanders in the tunnels, mad and crazed. He could be a disgraced nobleman, a fallen champion or a former rat-catcher who was lost in the maze of tunnels below and had to survive on rats and other vermin. He sees other rat-catchers as either hostile enemies or as a source of food. While it is easy to put an end to this wretch’s life, the pressing question is why is the corpse of the son of a lord among his dead?
    3. The tunnels eventually lead to an underground paradise – a deep cavern where it is exposed to sunlight and vegetation grows rich and thick. There, many rat-catchers have escaped from their old life and form quasi-tribes, leaving off the vegetation, farming their own crops and even stealing from the surface world. Rat-catchers who found the place but refused to join are killed to keep the secret. If the adventurers do stumble here, it opens up lots of possibilities. Do they make the place their own? Attempt to escape? Aid the rat-catchers (and other outcasts) who have made their home there? What if a civil “war” is brewing just because they couldn’t get along with each other?
