The streets of the merchant’s plaza are abuzz with excitement. A strange new type of coin has recently surfaced – a pure silver coin with a strange runic symbol inscribed on it. Scholars and Sages have numerous theories about the coin – it seems to be of an ancient kingdom that pre-dates the area but it is too new, too recently minted. What is the source of the coins? Who is spending them freely? Will this just be passing fad or would it have long lasting consequences?
- The coins are a prelude to disaster, a deed done by cultists who worshipped a god of greed and envy. The runic symbol on the coin contains a faint trace of magic which only with powerful magic can be discerned. Those who possess the coins find an urge to have more and to spend them. Afterwards, they would yearn to have those coins back by any means, even if it is murder. Eventually the entire city would be plunge into chaos over a chest of such silver coins. Only by breaking the altar dedicated to the god would this madness stop.
- A group of thief robbers have gotten fortunate – they have found a tomb of the rulers of the anicent kingdom and have brought back chests upon chests of those coins. Sorcery is used to keep those coins in their pristine condition – and also as a warding enchantment against the wrath of the interned dead. The spirits of the tomb which has been robbed would possess dead bodies, raising them as wights, to get back what was rightfully theirs.
- The adventurers would recognise the coin with a shock – they would have come across the symbol of the coin before. Perhaps it is an insignia of their deadliest foe, rival or an enigmatic NPC. Or maybe they have see the symbol within one of the ruined temples or tombs which they have explored. This can be used as a hook to link two adventures into a campagin.
