Two mystics (or other psionic or magic-using class) were friendly rivals in their life-time. Both achieve adepthood at the same time, under the same oak tree and have ever since challenge each other to a series of friendly duels, complex logical problems and finally, the ultimate test, to see if by the powers of their minds alone would they be able to change the world.
When the time draw near for the two mystics to depart from this world, they struck a deal. Each of them, rather to head off to Nirvana, would send their soul into two massive trees, each far apart from each other. From there they would influence events with their powers to improve things for the better. And that they did. The forests which contained those trees began to grow; the soil within became fertile and the fiefs stretching across their influence prospered. Soon, just recently, the boundary of the two forests met.
- The souls of the mystics have been so intended on improving the lot of the people around them that they have forgotten about each other in the centuries to come. When the boundaries of the two forest met, each of them sense an alien presence and immediately go into offence. Animals from both forests attack each others, including the hapless peasants from both side. The adventurers are come to investigate – with sorcery and mystical powers they may be able to locate the souls of the mystics. They either have to make them come to peace (perhaps making them remember each other) or…destroy them both.
- The moment the two forests merged into each other, the two mystics communicated with each other, comparing their achievements to see who have done better. Over time, the two mystics have mediated upon the paradox of life; of dying and living, of spring and winter, of the beginning and eternity, and each have came to different conclusion. One of them have decided to spread his forest throughout the entire realm, returning the country to a more simple, primitive way of life and using his powers, if necessary, to remove desires from all men. “For desire is the root of all suffering”. The other mystic disagreed and began to perceive that just to prove himself, his long-time rival may do just that. The adventurers would need to plant 6 saplings of a mysterious seed into the forest of the corrupted mystic to trap his influence.
- A Shadow Elementalist has moved into the nearby desolate moorlands, and the two mystics, upon converging, decide that their next challenge would be to rid the land of the shadow. However, unknown to the two of them, the Elementalist is powerful, and a full-fledge mystical war would plunge the whole region into suffering. The adventurers would have to convince the mystics that they are able to take down the Elementalist on their own or find ways to prevent an outright conflict from breaking out. For instance, why does the Elementalist came to this region, while knowing the souls of two very powerful mystics are protecting it?
