The original rules require you to subtract the defender’s Defence from your Attack. Here are what you can do to remove the subtraction steps to speed up combat.
- Roll D20 and attempt to roll under your Attack
- If you do so, check if it is above the target’s Defence. If it is, you have hit.
If your Attack score is over 20, find how many points it is above 20 (let’s call it the Attack Overflow)
- Attack Overflow = Attack – 20
- Reduce your opponent’s Defence by the Attack Overflow
- Roll D20 and attempt to score above the opponent’s modified Defence
- If you manage to do so, you have hit your opponent.

For Attack 20 and below, if you roll exactly as the defender’s Defence score, then it is a critical hit.
